BOTEVGRAD HISTORICAL MUSEUM

It is located on Saransk Square, in the center of Botevgrad, in the building of the former court building. Museum activities in the municipality of Botevgrad have deep roots and a rich tradition. We connect the first interests for the historical past with the activity of the priest Georgi pop Dimitrov from the village of Skraven. The past and antiquities in the Botevgrad region are also being studied by longtime teacher Georgi Popivanov from the village of Trudovec. The need to build a museum collection in Botevgrad, then Orhani, was held for the first time in the newspaper "Orhanijske novine" number 1 from January 10, 1927, when the creation of an archeological museum within the reading room was noted among the upcoming tasks of the city's cultural and social elite.

The first museum collection was arranged in 1937, thanks to the director of the gymnasium - Asen Stefanov. With the help of teachers, students and parents, a lot of documentary, material, archeological and ethnographic material was collected. They are arranged in one of the classrooms, and the collection was opened on May 24, 1937. During 1950, enriched and expanded, it was moved to the cultural center "Hristo Botev 1884", where the first unpaid curator for many years was the local ethnographer Tashko Ninov. Two years later, the collection was declared a state museum, and the building of the former hotel-cafe "Bristol" was provided for its needs. On May 24, 1959, a joint national museum was ceremoniously opened in a building adapted for this purpose. In 1970, the second collection of the museum was opened.

This building was also demolished in 1977 due to the reconstruction of the city, and the museum was only moved to a warehouse, without an exhibition. In 1985, the first exhibition of the museum's art collection was arranged, which marked the beginning of the museum's art gallery. By the decision of the Municipal Council from 1988, a building in the center of the city opposite the clock tower was provided for the opening of a new museum exhibition and gallery. In the same year, an art gallery was opened on the ground floor. The two residential floors above it have been renovated and adapted to the museum setting. The museum exhibition was opened there on January 4, 1991. Due to the reconstruction of the ground floor at the end of 1991, the art gallery was removed from this building in 1994 and is located in the west wing of the Ritual House, where museum funds were transferred in 1999. In this form, the museum exhibition with an art gallery exists until 2010. On 01.07.2010.

Reconstruction of the court building in Botevgrad begins, for which there is no evidence that it is registered as an immovable cultural property. Its author is the architect Pencho Kojcev, and its construction was completed in the late thirties of the twentieth century. The court in Botevgrad was a one-storey symmetrical building of low level with a pronounced central volume and sloping roofs. Only one floor is exposed, which is raised from the ground level by means of a stone pedestal the height of the lower half-buried floor. The entrance was located in the middle of the five arches of the main facade and was reached by a stone staircase. Today, the elegant insertion of the entire attic, preserving the characteristic arcade of the main facade, shows the legacy of architectural thought. This at the same time maintains the austerity and elegance of the building. On May 3, 2011, the building was opened.
